Zoom your way into a brighter more whiter confident smile.

A radiant smile is often considered a symbol of good health and confidence. Tooth whitening is a popular cosmetic dentistry procedure that can help individuals achieve a brighter, whiter smile.

Tooth discolouration can occur for various reasons:

Extrinsic Stains: Stains that are located on the tooth surface, resulting from the buildup of chromogenic substances. They are caused by factors like coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, and certain foods. Extrinsic stains can be removed mechanically from the tooth surface through scaling and polishing at the dental office as well as at home whitening toothpastes that contain abrasive substances.

Intrinsic Stains: These stains are located inside the tooth structure. They result from factors such as aging, genetics, or excessive fluoride exposure during tooth development. Extrinsic stains can also contribute to intrinsic staining if not removed over time. Intrinsic stains are only able to be removed with bleaching agents that can penetrate into the tooth structure. These include whitening products that contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as active ingredients.

There are many whitening options available on the market:

Whitening Toothpaste: Toothpaste formulated for whitening may help remove surface stains but is less effective at changing the natural color of the teeth.

Over-the-Counter Whitening Products: These include whitening strips, gels, and trays that can be purchased without a prescription. While they may provide some improvement, professional treatments typically yield more significant results.

Professional Whitening: An effective whitening method we use at Montrose Dental is an at-home whitening system. This involves fabricating custom-fitted trays into which a strong formulation of whitening gel is placed at home. The patient wears the trays filled with the whitening gel for a specified period each day until the desired level of whitening is achieved.

Tooth whitening is a safe and effective way to enhance your smile, but it’s essential to approach it with caution and under the guidance of a dental professional. Overuse of whitening products can lead to tooth sensitivity and other issues. Additionally, the results of tooth whitening are not permanent, and periodic touch-ups may be needed to maintain the desired level of whiteness. Before undergoing any tooth whitening procedure, it is recommended to have a dental examination to ensure that the teeth and gums are in good health and that tooth whitening is a suitable option.
